While sitting here waiting on tires, I added a little more detail/weathering to the engine compartment, specifically hood pin posts, dried mud and the unusual rusty, paintless area at the back of the hood (see real truck).

After 7 months of searching, asking, begging, hounding anyone with an offroad model, I finally have the wheels and tires I will be using. The tires are resin copies of ones that came on some of Lindberg's 1/20 scale pickup models. They are EXACTLY the same brand (BF Goodrich) and scale size (35") that this and so many other racers in this class use! The down side is the hole for the wheel is pretty large (about 17-18" to scale and racers use 15" and 16" wheels). The wheel originally came in a 79 Bronco kit from Model King. It was cut up/modified and given a thick outer rim making it fit the tire. They look very close... as close as I am going to get. I am using them to make resin casts.... I went to all the trouble to find and make them, I WILL need them on future builds.

I made time to run the interior cage through the floor and connect it to the frame. Things look a little too "clean". I am going to have to add some welding, dirt, rust, etc. before calling that part done.

The lack of detail in the grill was disappointing. Of course the areas between the grille slats was removed too using mostly heavy sanding from the back. After trying many things to make the chrome headlights look real I finally settled on printing out photos of headlights (and turn signals) on heavy paper and gluing them into the headlight holes. Many, probably 30 sets of lights, were gone through in order to find the ones that looked just right. The ones on the real truck did not look real on the model.

The second set of decals came out very well (as compared to the first set). They were printed on a color laser printer using Detail Master's clear decal paper. Then "fixed" using Tamiya's clear coat.

I made the window nets using lace (from the bridal dept. of the local fabric store) surrounded by masking tape. Then painted the whole thing using flat black spray paint. Before attaching them I will hit them with a light coat of gray and tan to give a faded and dusty look.

The original kit came with a drag link for a solid axle (shown on red Bronco), not a TTB suspension (shown on unfinished Bronco). Now the steering is much more correct.

A new, set of steering arms were fabricated. (this is before being painted). Obviously, this setup has to connect to something at the upper end. A steering box had to be make as the kit did not come with one.

On the real truck the white-ish line runs around the cell and vents to the ground (it originally had a filter at the end but it kept clogging so it was removed.) The blue line goes to the factory fuel line to the front of the truck.

For those that don't know what this is... with all the dust that is thrown into the air, the drivers in a desert racing vehicle need to filter the air they breath. A small fan pulls air through a filter (under the silver cover) and forces it, via two hoses, into the sides of the drivers' helmets.

After searching and searching for an Art Carr shifter, I gave up and made one. The shift knob (a sewing pin dipped in black paint encouraged to the correct shape) and mounting finish off the shifter. The gate and badge on the side were printed off my ink jet onto decal paper.

Hand fabbed headers using solder, rusty exhaust from styrene, air cleaner made from sandpaper painted red. And of course, distributor with wires. Still needs dust on air cleaner... a little too new looking.

These decals were made mostly in Adobe Illustrator with a few others "borrowed" off the web and cleaned up in Photoshop. I then scanned the body of the actual model (by placing it on my scanner with the lid up and room lights out) and used it to get all the logos to the correct size.

Finally found the correct steering wheel (an aftermarket wheel came in the kit). Gloss black is a little too shiny... it will get a layer of dirt and a coat of clear matt coat to make it look more real. Mounted it and the homemade tach, to the new steering column.

The bed was cut out and support across the rear added along with tailgate details, like strikers, missing in the kit. Fenders drastically cut like real racer. Bulkhead fabbed and test fitted to the interior. Door panels now have been "removed" (sanded off) and holes added. And little stuff like "removing" the windshield wipers and drilling holes where antenna would have been.

After everything fit correctly, more bars to mount the seats were added. The dash was also modified so cage would go around it. Made the rear bumper and battery mounts.

Grill was sanded from the back allowing me to punch out the spaces between grill slats. Cage receives another section: inside the engine compartment and out the front bumper. Firewall painted and weathered. Fuel cell made... filler hose was found on a 4x4 RC model transmitter (the tube around the antenna). Shocks were created also. 9" rear end receives a truss and pre-weathering paint.

Rear bumper now has the extensions that tie it to the cage. The drip rails above the door were added (poorly molded in the original kit... sanded off and rebuilt).
