Making a Mold

After having the parts I wanted to make a mold of, I built a box out of Legos to hold the RTV (molding material). The blue clay, supplied with the kit, was used to hold the box to the base and also help make it "water tight". Since this was my first attempt at molding/casting, I probably went over board with the use of clay... better safe than sorry.

I then SLOWLY poured the RTV into the mold and let it cure overnight.

The next morning I removed the Legos and then the new mold. The center wheel and backside rim are still superglued to the CD case base.

The finished mold all clean and ready to cast a pair of tires. You might be wondering about the runners between the parts. I read a lot about the introduction of bubbles during the casting process and the runners are used to reduce that... I pour the resin into the runner allowing it to drip into the wheel, rather than pouring directly on top of the actual surface. The thought is it will give a little more time for bubbles to come to the top of the resin away from the final part.
